Lightweighting of cars, reducing the mass of the car body as much as possible without reducing the strength and safety of the car.
From the following table comparing the performance of carbon fiber composites with other lightweight materials, we can see that carbon fiber composites are the least dense and have far better strength properties than other lightweight materials. The use of carbon fiber reinforced epoxy resin composites (CFRP) to partially replace traditional metal materials is currently one of the most effective ways to achieve lightweighting in cars.
Carbon fiber reinforced composites versus other lightweighting materials
Materials | Density (g/cm3) | Tensile strength, MPa | Specific Strength (N.m/kg) | Tensile modulus (GPa) | Specific modulus |
High strength steel (TRIP780) | 7.8 | 780 | 100×103 | 207 | 26×103 |
Aluminum | 2.7 | 360 | 133×103 | 70 | 49×103 |
Magnesium alloy(AZ91) | 1.8 | 240 | 133×103 | 45 | 25×103 |
Glass fiber reinforced composite materials | 1.85 | 960 | 512×103 | 39 | 21×103 |
Carbon fiber reinforced composite materials | 1.63 | 1240 | 761×103 | 215 | 132×103 |
How to make a Carbon fiber reinforced composite?
The High-Pressure Resin Transfer Molding process, or HP-RTM molding process for short. It is a molding process in which resin is hedged and mixed using high pressure and injected into a vacuum-tight mold pre-lined with fiber reinforcement and pre-set inserts, which is filled, impregnated, cured and demolded by the flow of resin to obtain composite products. This allows for low cost, short cycle times (high volume) and high-quality production.
YQXPOLYMER epoxy resin 0164 series and the special curing agent is designed for making such excellent carbon fiber reinforced composite with fast curing speed, low exothermic peak during curing, good infiltration, resulting in reinforcing fibers and high physical and mechanical strength of products, which are fully applicable to the HP-RTM molding process and are high-quality materials for the preparation of carbon fiber composites for vehicles, epically for wheels, engine box, battery box, and body parts.
